DEHRADUN

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand. It is part of the Garhwal Region of the state and is situated 237 kms from New Delhi.  Dehradun is one of the oldest cities in India and has been ruled by the Sikhs, Mughals, Gurkhas and the British.

Providing a gateway to Mussoorie and the Garhwal region, Dehradun is located in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas nestled between the Ganges on the East and the Yamuna River on the West.  The city is known for its picturesque landscape with gushing streams, deep ravines, lustrous valley, delectable cuisine and its slightly milder climate suitable for outdoor activities.  It is well connected and in close proximity to the tourist destinations of Mussoorie and Auli as well as the holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh and the pilgrimage circuit of Char Dham.  Dehradun is also known for its basmati rice and bakery products. Dehradun houses various defense academies and research institutes such as the Indian Military Academy, Forest Research Institute and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology while also being a well-known education hub with schools like Doon School and Welham Schools.

Dehradun was founded in 1676 and became a municipality in 1867.  The area of Dehradun covers 300 sq kms.   Population of Dehradun is close to 6 lacs.   The local language is Garhwali.

JOLLY GRANT AIRPORT

The Dehradun Airport is also known as the Jolly Grant Airport.  The airport is located 25 kms from Dehradun and is the main airport for Uttarakhand.  Constructed in 1974, the Jolly Grant Airport started with flights between Dehradun Airport and Pant Nagar Airport.  Flights between Dehradun and Delhi were started in 2004 by Air Deccan.  The airport underwent an upgradation and modernization phase in 2007 after which flights were resumed in 2008.  A new terminal building was constructed and launched in 2021.  Dehradun is currently connected with over 15 cities across India serviced by Air India, Vistara and Indigo. Public transport and private taxis are available from the Airport to Dehradun.

DEHRADUN RAILWAY STATION

Established in 1899, the Dehradun Railway Station is part of the Northern Railways section of the Indian Railways.  Some of the important trains running on this line include the Dehradun Jan Shatabdi Express, Dehradun Express, Allahabad Link Express, Dehradun Shatabdi Express, Varanasi-Dehradun Express, Dehradun-Amritsar Express and the Mussoorie Express.  Dehradun is the last station on the Northern Railways line.  In April, the government launched the Delhi-Dehradun Vande Bharat train which runs 6 days a week between Dehradun and Anand Vihar Station in Ghaziabad.

Being located in the heart of the city, just 2 kms from the Clock Tower, it is conveniently connected to the ISBT Bus Stand which is 4.5 kms away.  The Airport is 24 kms from the Station.

DELHI-DEHRADUN EXPRESSWAY

The Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway (National Highway 709B) is an access-controlled expressway which is currently under construction.  This expressway, which is 210 kms long, will connect New Delhi with Dehradun.  Scheduled to be completed by November 2024, the first leg of the expressway will cover the route from Akshardham to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway.  This 32 km stretch will not charge any toll for commuters entering or exiting in Delhi and will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun.  The rest of the stretch till Dehradun is also expected to be completed by early next year.

Once fully operational, the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun is expected to reduce from the current 6 hours to around 2.5 hours.  There will also be a 51 km link to Haridwar.

Apart from the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, Dehradun is also connected through a good network of roads and highways.  Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh is 544 kms from Dehradun.
