UTTARKASHI
Uttarakhand is divided into two regions- Kumaon and Garhwal. Uttarkashi is a district which comes under the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The district headquarters is in Uttarkashi city. Uttarkashi, which means Kashi of the North, is one of the districts of Uttarakhand as well as a city in the district of Uttarkashi. Some of the key towns in this district are 1. Barkot 2. Dunda 3. Uttarkashi is a spiritual place and is also known for adventure tourism. The Uttarkashi town is also known as Shivnagri. The town is recognized for the number of temples and ashrams that adorn the area.​

Uttarakashi town is located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River at an altitude of 1158 m above sea level. The town has a lot of similarities to Varanasi which is also called Kashi. Uttarakashi has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva- Vishwanath Temple. Uttarkashi is also considered the gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage sites.

Since ancient times, Uttarkashi has been a meditational centre for many Hindu sages. Due to its serene location along the Ganges River, Uttarkashi has been the first choice for yoga.

Uttarkashi is also known as a hub for trekking and is home to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering . Some of the summer and winter trekking destinations are Dodital, Dayara, Bugyal, Yamunotri, Kedarkantha, and Har ki Dun.

Uttarkashi has a number of offbeat hill stations that can be visited. These include Harsil, Chaurangi Khal, Sankri, and Nelong Valley on the India-China border.

Uttarkashi is 144 kms from Dehradun, the state capital of Uttarakhand.
