Uttarakhand is divided into two regions- Kumaon and Garhwal.  Uttarkashi is a district which comes under the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The population of Uttarkashi is around 3.3 lakhs.  Uttarkashi is spread over the north-west corner of the state stretching over 8,000 sq kms of area over the Himalayas.  This district borders Himachal Pradesh and Tibet on the north and the district of Chamoli on the east.  This area is rich in cultural heritage.
