Overview

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple is one of the oldest and most important holy shrine in this district.  Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River.  Due to its location, it is also part of the Char Dham yatra pilgrimage.

The temple is situated in the main Uttarkashi city. It is believed to have been built by Sage Parshuram and later renovated by Maharani Khaneti, wife of Sudarshan Shah in 1857.  The present temple was built over the ancient alter in that year in the traditional Himalayan temple architecture.

The Shivlingam inside the temple is 56 cms in height.  The sancum sanctorum of the temple also contains idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesh.

Pooja is conducted every day.  In the evening, visitors are greeted by the sound of bells and the chanting of mantras by the pundits.
