Part of the Maneri-Bhali Hydroelectric project conceptualized in the 1960's, the dam was commissioned in 1984.  The dam is located on the Bhagirathi River, with the water being diverted to a tunnel connected to the hydropower project.

Since 2008, the dam has become popular as a pilgrimage route with pilgrims trekking towards Gangotri.  Over time, it has evolved into a scenic spot for picnics, fishing, boating, trekking  and camping.

The area around Maneri Dam is popular for short walks and serves as a base for exploring nearby treks and holy sites.   It is especially picturesque during sunrise and sunset.  The calm reservoir, gushing waters and panoramic mountain views make it an ideal venue for nature lovers, photographers and those seeking to get away from city life.​​
