Overview

This Hindu Pilgrimage town on the banks of the Bhagirathi River is 99 kms from Uttarkashi city. Gangotri is considererd to be the origin of the Holy River Ganges. It is for this reason that it is part of the Char Dham Yatra. The area is also known for its natural beauty with its snow-capped peaks and the Gangotri Glacier.
The Gangotri Temple closes for the winter due to heavy snowfall during this period. The temple stands at an altitude of 3,415 mtrs above sea level. The Gangotri town is also open from May to October.

Gangotri is also the starting point for some treks in the area. While visiting Gangotri, take in some of the nearby places like Bhagirath Shila, Pandava Gufa, Tapovan, Bhairon Ghati, the Gaumukh Glacier and the submerged Shivalinga. The main origin of the river is the Gaumukh Glacier, which is located 19 kms from the Gangotri Temple.
