Overview

Built in 1832, George Everest House is located just 6 kms from Gandhi Chowk. Its location offers a spectacular view of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks as well as panoramic views of the Doon Valley.  It has also been converted into a museum after its renovation in 2021.

Sir George Everest was the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843.  Sir George lived in this house for 11 years till his retirement and return to England in 1843.Sir George is recognized for having completed the section of the Great Trigonometric Survey of India along the meridian arc from the south of India extending north to Nepal. Mount Everest was named after Sir George Everest as a tribute to him since he accurately measured the peak which was previously known as Peak XV.

The complex surrounding the Sir George Everest House and Laboratory is known as Park Estate.  It has become a popular tourist attraction and is famous for camping, picnics and outdoor adventures.  The location of Everest House is such that you can see panoramic views of the Doon Valley on one side and the Himalayan ranges on the other!

Camping is available near the Everest House and there is an Everest Cafe in the complex leading to the George Everest Peak, just 500 meters from the house.
