Dehradun Clock Tower 1.jpg

Located in the centre of the city on Rajpur Road, the Clock Tower or Ghanta Ghar is an iconic landmark of Dehradun as well as a major attraction. The Clock Tower has an hexagaonal shape, making it one of its kind in Asia!  With a height of 85 metres, this unique six-faced tower has a clock on each side.  While the Clock Tower is no longer functional, it is still a tourist attraction and identified with the city.

The construction of this tower was begun in 1948 with the foundation stone being laid by Sarojini Naidu.  It was built in the memory of Lala Balbir Singh, a local resident and was also called the Balbir Clock Tower.  It was completed in 1953 with the inauguration being done by then Railway Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The names of freedom fighters were engraved in a gold plaque across the surface of the tower.

This beautifully designed tower is situated in Paltan Market, surrounded by shops. It is almost 7 kms from the ISBT Bus Stand.

The Clock Tower also indicates the centre of the city and all major commercial centres are easily accessible from here.  Even the major roads of the city such as Chakrata Road, Paltan Bazaar, Rajpur Road and Haridwar Road are connected to the Clock Tower.

For those wanting to visit the Clock Tower, the Railway Station is just 2 kms away and the Airport is 26 kms from the Clock Tower.
