BACKGROUND

Located 3.5 kms from Haridwar, the main idol in the Chandi Devi Temple is believed to have been established by the great saint Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century AD.  The present structure of the temple was constructed  by Suchan Singh, the King of Kashmir.

According to legend, two demons- Shumbh  and Nishumbh captured the kingdom of Lord Indra.  Demon Shumbh was attracted to Goddess Parvati and wanted to marry her.  After she rejected him, the demon sent two warriors- Mund and Chand to fight with Goddess Parvati.  The Goddess created Chandika to kill the warriors as well as the demons Shumbh and Nishumbh.  This battle took place at Neel Parvat. Thus, the temple of Chandi Devi was established here.
