Nainital is named after the Nainital Lake , which is also known as Naini Lake. Surrounded by seven panoramic hills, this natural freshwater body located in the town of Nainital is a crescent shaped lake 1.4 kms in length with a depth of 99 feet. The lake was found in 1839 by a British businessman, P. Baron who discovered it during a hunting expedition.

The Naini Lake can be divided into two parts: Mallital (the Northern part) and Tallital (the Southern part).

The Naini Lake is the most popular tourist attractions in Nainital. It is the most visited lake in the country. A trip to Nainital is incomplete without a boat ride on the Naini Lake. The lake offers various options for yachting, kayaking, boating and paddling. The pedal and rowing boats can be hired for Rs. 120 per hour. A Gondola boat will cost Rs. 150 for a round trip. The Mall Road is located next to the Naini Lake and offers an opportunity to shop and dine.
The Naini Lake is open from 6 AM to 6 PM.
