Overview

Tapkeshwar is a famous holy temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Asan River in Dehradun, this temple is known to have one of the oldest Shivling in the cave. Located just 6.5 kms from the Dehradun city, the Tapkeshwar Temple is named after the water droplets that originate from a rock and fall on the Shivling placed in the shrine.

According to mythology, it was believed that the cave was once the residence of Guru Dronacharya, the mentor of the Pandavas and Kauravas. The cave is named Drona Cave after him. Legend has it that Dronacharya could not afford a cow or cow's milk to feed his son, Asthawama. His son, therefore, prayed to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, being pleased with his prayers, fed him milk through drippings from the Shivling.

The Tapkeshwar Temple is visited by thousands of devotees round the year. Even today, visitors can see water dripping on the Shivling continuously. During Shivratri, one can find long queues of devotees waiting for darshans.
