The Khalanga War Memorial is dedicated to the memory of the Gorkha soldiers who fought against the British army in the Battle of Nalapani from 1814 -16.  The Memorial is located 6 kms from Dehradun city centre.  The interesting point is that the memorial was constructed by the British for the Gorkha Soldiers who fought against them as they were impressed by the courage, fearlessness and reslience of the soldiers.

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Dehradun, the Khalanga War Memorial is one of the important heritage sites in India.  It is surrounded by greenery and scenery, making it a pleasant outing.

It is stated that 600 soldiers and families defended the Kangra Fort against 3500 British Army soldiers equipped with cannons.  In October 1814, the British Army marched to Dehradun to take over Nepali territory.  The Nepali forces occupied the area between the Ganga and Yamuna in Garhwal and Kumaon districts.  The British were defeated in this war, and they withdrew to Dehradun.  A few days later, they fought another battle and lost again.

For one month, the British army surrounded the Kangra Fort.  The British then blocked all water sources to gain control and were eventually successful after attacking the Fort and defeating the Nepali army.
