Originally known as Rockville, the property was acquired by Dr Wright in the 1800's. It was sold in 1858 to Col. Seals. At this time, the property was spread over 952 acres of oak and pine forest. In 1875, the property was bought by the wife of the Deputy Collector of Allahabad. It was eventually taken over by the Agra Savings Bank in 1888.

Over the years, the property has changed hands many times. In 1970, the property was divided into three parts of approximately 300 acres each. The property was now known as Jabharkhet Estate 1, II & III. Jabarkhet Estate I forms part of the Jabharkhet Nature Reserve.

During the 1800's, the forest was used to supply wood to Mussoorie town and the cantonment. This was stopped by the Mussoorie Municipality in 1880's due to a concern about the large scale tree felling. This was the first attempt to stop the exploitation of the forest.

The first step towards environmental sustainability was undertaken in the 1960's. The forest was divided into 50 compartments and each year a certain number of compartments were used for logging, removing dead and fallen trees and plantation.
The Jabarkhet Nature Reserve is open to all visitors who have an interest in nature, walking, hiking, photography and birdwatching. Small groups of up to 5 people are allowed at a time.
