NAINITAL

Located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Nainital is a popular hill station.  This city also houses the Uttarakhand High Court.  Nainital was the summer capital of the United Provinces.  The city is set in a valley containing an eye-shaped lake (Naini Lake) at 6358 ft above sea level.

Nainital was first developed as a hill station by the British.  Set around the Nainital Lake, popular for boating, this hill station also provides for a cable car which takes you upto Snow View Observation Point for a bird's eye view of the city.

Nainital is conveniently located at just 285 kms from Dehradun and 345 kms from New Delhi.

Located on the edge of the Naina Lake, the Naina Devi Temple is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site in Naintial.  According to mythology, this temple dates back to when Lord Shiva was carrying the corpse of Sati and her eyes fell on the ground where the temple stands today.  The town of Nainital is named after "Eyes" or "Naina".
